(NewsNation) — The United States is commemorating the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks Thursday with memorial ceremonies and moments of silence.

Whether at ground zero in New York City, the Pentagon or a rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, millions across the country are expected to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the coordinated terrorist attacks.

Trump to attend Pentagon’s 9/11 memorial

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended an annual flag ceremony honoring the 184 service members and civilians killed when a jetliner flew into the U.S. military headquarters.

The president is also expected to attend a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers in New York.

Sept. 11 memorial in New York City

Families of those killed in the World Trade Center gathered at Memorial Plaza, where six moments of silence were observed and victims’ names were read aloud.

The Tribute in Light, two blue beams positioned to echo the Twin Towers, will light up the sky from dusk until dawn Thursday night. 

Ceremony honors hijacked Flight 93 in Pennsylvania

The Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville held an annual remembrance service Thursday.

The ceremony honored the 40 crew members and passengers who died after their plane was hijacked. People aboard attempted to storm the cockpit of the plane to retake it, but the craft ultimately crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania.
