(NewsNation) —  While retailers are gearing up for Christmas, business owners warn consumers might see fewer options and higher price tags for decorations this year as a result of tariffs.

Artificial Christmas trees have been one of the hardest hit holiday staples. Chris Butler, the CEO of the National Tree Company, told NewsNation his company has had to increase their prices by about 10% and the product they’ve imported is down 25% this year.

“We tried to absorb some costs, as you said, you know, we asked our manufacturing partners to absorb some costs, but then ultimately, we did have to pass some cost on,” Butler said.

Butler said he’d like to see the U.S. government grant an exemption on Christmas décor when it comes to tariffs and has been working to educate lawmakers on why the trees are made in China.

“We’ve had very constructive conversations with many members of the Senate Finance Committee. You know, that’s kind of where things could happen in the future,” he said. “The ask is really kind of more educational around why these products can’t be made in the U.S., and then you know what some potential solutions could be.”

He said that he remains optimistic that a solution can be found.

“I don’t think anyone in the administration would want Christmas to get caught up in this, but that’s, you know, here we are,” Butler said.
