(NewsNation) — Priscilla Presley is baring all in her new memoir “Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis.”
Presley’s book details her “difficult, inspiring journey beyond the walls of Graceland and behind the elegant image the world sees,” according to the book’s description.
The actress, 80, discussed her marriage to Elvis and shares her thoughts on her daughter Lisa Marie Presley’s marriage to Michael Jackson.
Priscilla Presley opens about marriage to Elvis Presley
Presley was on “Today” on Monday where she spoke candidly about infidelity in her marriage with Elvis Presley, calling him “very, very special.”
“Our life was very different, you know? Very, very different. And when he was in Vegas, you know, he was really starting his career back again into Vegas,” she said.
Priscilla Presley on Michael Jackson
Presley didn’t mince words about music superstar Michael Jackson in her book as it related to him marrying Lisa Marie Presley, calling him manipulative, according to an excerpt published by The Sun.
“I asked her if they had a physical relationship,” she wrote. “Like so many people, I wasn’t sure. She said ‘yeah.’”
Lisa Marie Presley and Jackson got married in 1994 and divorced two years later.
“I knew in my bones that Michael wasn’t marrying Lisa Marie; he was marrying the Presley dynasty,” Presley writes in her memoir. “Michael was a manipulative man, and I think he had his sights set on her long before she realized it.”
She added, “The childlike innocence he projected was part of his public mask.”
Lisa Marie Presley’s death
Lisa Marie Presley died in January 2023 at 54 years old from complications of a small bowel obstruction, something that Priscilla discusses in her upcoming book.
“I’m sharing it because it’s the first time I’ve ever lost a child. I have two, obviously, but I don’t wish that on anyone,” she said on “Today.”
Priscilla said she still hasn’t gotten over her daughter’s death and had spoken to her days before her passing, even making plans.
“And then, about two minutes later, she said, ‘Mom, I don’t know. I don’t think I can do it.’ I said, ‘What’s the matter?’ And she said, ‘My stomach. My stomach really, really hurts. I’ve been having a hard time with it.’ And I go, ‘Okay. Whatever you need to do,’” Priscilla said on the morning show.
“The next day, I waited. I thought she was gonna give me a call. And then, I get a call that Lisa was in the hospital, as we know it, and that she passed,” Priscilla said. “And to this day, I can’t get over it, especially having a great night before, and then the next day, taken away.”
Priscilla Presley’s relationship with Riley Keough
The author also discussed her legal battle with her granddaughter Riley Keough over control of her late mother’s estate.
Keough was named the sole trustee of the estate in June 2023, according to TVInsider.
“Riley and I are very, very close,” Presley told “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie. “In fact, we just spent the time together the day before yesterday, and she’s amazing. I mean, she truly is. I love her to death. She’s her own person, did her own thing at a very young age, and is thriving.”
Prisilla Presley’s “Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis” will be released on Sept. 23.
