(NewsNation) — Jimmy Kimmel has extended his deal with ABC, months after the network suspended him over comments about late conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel, 58, signed a one-year deal with Disney to continue hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Bloomberg reported.
The new deal will see the comedian host the long-running show through the end of the 2026-2027 season.
His current deal with ABC was scheduled to end May 2026.
Kimmel and Disney had agreed to the contract extension months ago but didn’t announce it out of respect for Stephen Colbert, sources told Bloomberg.
In July, CBS announced that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” would end in May 2026.
Jimmy Kimmel delayed announcement after Charlie Kirk controversy
Kimmel was reportedly set to make the announcement, but it was delayed after a firestorm erupted following the House of Mouse’s indefinite suspension of the late-night show in September amid conservative outcry over a comment referencing Kirk and President Donald Trump.
Following Kirk’s death, Kimmel accused Republicans of trying to “score political points” from Kirk’s death.
The frequent Oscars host then criticized President Trump after airing video of the president taking a question about Kirk’s death. In the clip, Trump abruptly changes the subject to talk about a planned White House ballroom. Kimmel joked Trump was mourning Charlie Kirk “the way a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
After local affiliate stations decided to pull Kimmel off the air, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr suggested that the agency may act against ABC and Disney.
Jimmy Kimmel welcomed back by huge audience
Following massive backlash over his suspension, Kimmel returned to the air on Sept. 23, saying “it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
Over 6.2 million viewers tuned into Kimmel’s return to air, making it the most-watched episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in a decade, according to NBC News.
