(NewsNation) — The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced Thursday — and there’s two names glaringly missing from the list: Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez.
Both did Oscar-level movies this year — Lopez starred in “Unstoppable,” a biopic where she played wrestler Anthony Robles’ mother, and Jolie starred in “Maria,” a biopic about opera singer Maria Callas.
Both were lauded for their roles in each of their movies.
But neither of the women — or their movies — were nominated at all.
Why were Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie not nominated for Oscars this year?
The reasons are banal but clear, according to my Academy sources.
”People see J.Lo as a celebrity — not an actress,” my source sniffed. As I wrote earlier this year, Hollywood looks upon Lopez as “a Kardashian ” — as opposed to a (Meryl) Streep.
After Lopez’s oversharing twin bombs of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” and “This Is Me…Now,” one former friend sniffed, “She’s turned herself into a Kardashian: All pictures and paparazzi, oversharing everything and no actual substance.”
Even before this year, Lopez was snubbed for her decent turn in 2019’s “Hustlers” for the same reason.
“No one takes her seriously. Not then and especially not now,” the friend said.
And while Lopez is seen as a joke, Jolie is seen as a villain.
”Nobody in Los Angeles can stand her,” another Academy source said. “Everyone loves (her ex) Brad (Pitt) and they are appalled at how she seemingly has weaponized her children against him. There’s no way she would be nominated for an Oscar by her peers. She has no champions except in the fashion press.”
None of Pitt’s six children talk to him and five have legally removed his last name.
Beyond that, sources say there is an “artifice” to Jolie that is distasteful.
”Claiming she ‘finally found her voice’ again after all these years?” Sniffed one insider (quoting from Jolie’s “Maria” press tours). “Please. She never stopped talking.”
Jolie at least has one Oscar to her name — winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Girl, Interrupted” in 2000.
