(NewsNation) — Anna Wintour is reportedly stepping down from her role as editor-in-chief with Vogue after 37 years.
The Daily Front Row, as well as other outlets, have confirmed that the 75-year-old announced her departure during a staff meeting Wednesday.
Vogue, known as the “fashion bible,” will now be searching for a new head of editorial content, but Wintour will be staying on as Condé Nast’s global chief content officer and the global editorial director at the magazine.
Anna Wintour started at Vogue in 1988
Wintour started her career with the magazine in 1988, taking over for former editor-in-chief Grace Mirabella. Her first cover, which was the November 1988 issue, showed model Michaela Bercu in a pair of $50 denim jeans. This was reportedly the first time denim had been on the cover.
In 2012, Wintour told Vogue, “It was so unlike the studied and elegant close-ups that were typical of ‘Vogue’s’ covers back then. … This one broke all the rules.” Wintour’s decision also started the trend of having celebrities on magazine covers.

It was even thought that Wintour’s reputation for being intimidating inspired Miranda Priestly’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada.” The author, Lauren Weisberger, said she found inspiration for her novel from stories she heard from friends who were in the industry.
When the novel was eventually turned into a film, Wintour showed up to the premiere in 2006 dressed in Prada.
Anna Wintour allowed cameras to capture making of annual issue
In 2009, Wintour broke the norm again by allowing cameras inside “Vogue” to capture the annual “September issue.” The documentary, called “The September Issue,” filmed Wintour and her team’s daily tasks as they created the largest issue to date.
Eventually, Wintour became the artistic director of Condé Nast in 2013. Then, in 2019, she became the global content advisor.
Her replacement hasn’t been named as of June 26.
