(NewsNation) — Two people are dead and eight are injured after a shooting on Florida State University’s campus on Thursday in Tallahassee.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, but the family of Tiru Chabba confirmed he was one of those killed in the shooting.
FSU President Richard McCullough confirmed Friday during the vigil that Robert Morales was one of the victims.
Students described the atmosphere on Thursday as they were instructed to shelter in place while law enforcement cleared the nearly 500-acre campus.
“It’s unfortunate, but I’ve grown up in this time that school shootings and campus shootings are common enough,” FSU junior Ryan Cedergren said. “I just knew I’d be calm and hide and do what I could.”
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare treated six patients from the shooting. Two are expected to be released Friday, three are in good condition, and one remains in fair condition, officials said.
Doctors from the hospital did not confirm whether the shooter was one of those treated.
The hospital received patients with gunshot wounds to the extremities, chest and abdomen. Three were taken into surgery immediately.
Doctors noted that the hospital had trained for this type of event and that patients were able to be treated quickly. All are expected to make a full recovery.
A vigil is planned for Friday evening on campus.
Tiru Chabba

The family of the 45-year-old father of two confirmed he was killed in Thursday’s shooting.
Chabba, who lives in Greenville, S.C. was on campus as an employee of a campus vendor.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
“Tiru Chabba’s family is going through the unimaginable now,” attorney Bakari Sellers said in a release from the State University System of Florida.
“Instead of hiding Easter eggs and visiting with friends and family, they’re living a nightmare where this loving father and devoted husband was stolen from them in an act of senseless and preventable violence.”
“We ask you to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as we fight to ensure they see justice that honors the memories of Mr. Chabba and all the victims of Thursday’s shooting.”
Robert Morales

The family of Robert Morales identified him as a victim of the shooting.
Morales was an FSU alumni who worked for dining services.
He was also the son of Ricardo Morales, a Cuban exile who became a CIA operative in South Florida.
FSU Vice President Kyle Clark praised Morales’s kindness, patience, humor and warmth during Friday’s vigil.
“Robert was passionate. about many things, his family, FSU, the Miami Dolphins, and great food. Every day, you could find him in one of our dining locations working alongside our chefs and frontline employees, supporting our students and ensuring our operations met the highest level of standards,” Clark said.
He didn’t just do a job, he lived the job. He lived for the mission of service and cared for the FSU community,” he added.
In a statement from the State University System of Florida, Morales was noted to be a member of the FSU family since 2015.
