Race for the nomination: Ahead of Super Tuesday, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have dominated their respective races. New Hampshire has been Biden’s closest race so far, where he skipped the primary and still won by more than 40 percentage points. The president also faced a protest vote in Michigan which resulted in “Uncommitted” winning two delegates. In elections where Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley have both appeared on the ballot, Trump has won seven of the eight contests. Haley has gained momentum and won the Washington, D.C., primary Sunday. Find NewsNation’s voter guide here >

Why Super Tuesday is considered super: Some say it’s all about the delegates — people chosen to represent their community at their political party’s nominating convention. Super Tuesday has the largest delegate haul of any day in the presidential primary calendar with 1,420 for Democrats and 854 for Republicans. It represents more than one-third of the total delegates available in each party’s nomination process. 

What’s next: While analysts expect a Trump-Biden rematch in November, neither candidate will be able to claim the title of “presumptive nominee” of their respective party on Super Tuesday. March 12 is the earliest that could happen for Trump and March 19 for Biden. In order to clinch the nomination on March 12, Trump would need to win about 90% of the nearly 1,100 delegates at stake. Biden would need to win roughly 77% of the nearly 2,300 delegates at stake through March 19 to achieve the nomination by that date. As of Super Tuesday, there will be 132 days until the Republican National Convention, 167 days until the Democratic National Convention and 245 until the November general election. SCOTUS rules Trump can stay on Colorado ballot

What’s going on: The Supreme Court on Monday overturned Colorado’s highest court’s decision to exclude former President Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential primary in a 9-0 vote. The decision, made a day before Super Tuesday primaries, ends efforts in other states such as Maine and Illinois to kick Trump off the ballot. Trump called the ruling a “BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!” Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold said the decision was “disappointing.” Why Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said she wanted Trump on the Colorado primary ballot >

5 dead after small plane crashes near Nashville interstate

What happened: Five people have died after a small plane crashed near the shoulder of an interstate in Nashville, Tennessee, authorities told NewsNation affiliate WKRN.

Crash: The Metro Nashville Police Department said a single-engine plane reached out to the control tower at John C. Tune Airport, reporting engine failure and needing emergency approval to land. The plane was given approval to land, but the pilot told the control tower they weren’t going to make it to the airport. The plane crashed just off the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 and imploded on impact. Latest on the crash investigation >

Supreme Court temporarily blocks Texas law that allows police to arrest migrants

Authority over immigration: An order issued Monday by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito put a Texas law that would allow state officers to arrest people suspected of entering the country illegally on hold. The law had been set to take effect Saturday under a ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court ruling pushes the date back until March 13. Texas has until March 11 to respond. The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to intervene, saying the law would alter “the status quo that has existed between the United States and the States in the context of immigration for almost 150 years.” The Texas Attorney General’s Office said the law “was adopted to address the ongoing crisis at the southern border, which hurts Texans more than anyone else.” The latest >
