New speech: Former President Donald Trump says he has rewritten the speech he is set to deliver at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee after being the target of an attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. In an interview with The Washington Examiner, Trump detailed his plan to call for unity Thursday. “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. ‘Reality is just setting in’: In the same interview, Trump said “reality is just setting in” after the assassination attempt. As he boarded his plane in New Jersey to head to Milwaukee, he said: “I rarely look away from the crowd. RNC security: Over 50,000 people are expected to gather in downtown Milwaukee for the start of the 2024 Republican National Convention. While Republicans plan to gather to name Trump the GOP presidential nominee, the focus of the convention seems to have shifted to security after the Trump rally shooting. The Secret Service, which is under scrutiny in the wake of the assassination attempt, says Saturday’s rally shooting did not prompt any changes to its security plan for the event. The RNC is designated as a “National Special Security Event,” which involves about 18 months of planning by the Secret Service, FBI and dozens of other law enforcement agencies. RNC first day: Trump’s plane touched down in Milwaukee on Sunday evening for the RNC. Even with the violence at Saturday’s campaign rally setting a dark backdrop for the convention, the RNC is moving forward as planned. The convention’s first day is still expected to focus on the economy, with speakers expected to discuss tariffs and lowering taxes. Full report >
Convention protests: Protesters gathering in Milwaukee for the RNC say the assassination attempt of Trump won’t affect their plans to demonstrate outside the convention. The largest expected protest is set for Monday morning. The Coalition to March on the RNC plans to protest for immigrant rights and access to abortion rights, as well as against the war in Gaza. “The shooting has nothing to do with us,” said Omar Flores, a coalition spokesman. Trump rally shooting: Sources told The Associated Press that a local law enforcement officer encountered the gunman moments before he fired toward Trump during the Pennsylvania campaign rally. They said not long before shots rang out, rallygoers noticed a man climbing to the roof of a building and warned local police. When an officer climbed to the roof, the source says suspected shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks pointed his rifle at the officer. As the officer retreated down the ladder, Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump. Then, Secret Service counter snipers fatally shot him. The latest >
Suspected shooter: Early Sunday morning, the FBI identified Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the attempted assassin. The suspected Trump rally shooter was registered as a Republican, graduated from high school in 2022 and donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project Super PAC in January 2021. Senior FBI officials confirmed with NewsNation’s Evan Lambert that Crooks had “no indication of mental health issues,” and that no threats toward the president or event have been found. Investigation: A top official at the FBI said Sunday the agency is investigating the shooting as an assassination attempt in addition to a potential domestic terrorism act. “At this point (in) the investigation, it appears that he (Crooks) was a lone actor, but we still have more investigation to go,” explained Robert Wells, the executive assistant director of the FBI’s National Security Branch. The FBI’s counterterrorism and criminal divisions are working together to determine a motive and have been combing through more than 2,600 tips. The shooting scene is still being processed, and “a suspicious device” found in Crooks’ car was sent to the Quantico lab for analysis. The Secret Service is investigating how the gunman with an AR-stye rifle managed to get on a nearby roof. Shooting victims: Amid the attempt to assassinate Trump, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed. David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were also injured, according to authorities. Comperatore, a former fire chief for South Buffalo Township, spent his final moments diving in front of his family, protecting them from gunfire. Comperatore’s quick decision to shield his wife and daughter from flying bullets has been praised. “He’s a literal hero. He shoved his family out of the way, and he got killed for them,” one of Comperatore’s neighbors said. His story >
Support for victims: Trump’s campaign has raised more than $2 million for the shooting victims through a GoFundMe. The Trump campaign confirmed the authenticity of the GoFundMe page to NewsNation partner The Hill. “All donations will be directed to these proud Americans as they grieve and recover. Biden address: President Joe Biden said there is no place in America for political violence like the attempted assassination of his predecessor. “It’s time to cool it down,” the president said in an address Sunday evening from the Oval Office. “Politics must never be a literal battlefield and God forbid a killing field.
