(NewsNation) — The Israel Atomic Energy Commission said Wednesday that recent U.S. military strikes have set back Iran’s nuclear program by “many years,” countering a U.S. report indicating a delay of only a matter of months.

“The devastating US strike on Fordo destroyed the site’s critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility inoperable,” the Israeli commission said in a statement. “We assess that the American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, combined with Israeli strikes on other elements of Iran’s military nuclear program, has set back Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years.”

The commission said the setback could be prolonged “indefinitely” if Iran were unable to regain access to nuclear materials.

The assessment follows an earlier report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency that determined the strikes set back Iran’s nuclear program by only a few months.

The report, described to the Associated Press by two people familiar with it, contradicted statements from President Donald Trump, who has said the Iranian nuclear program was “completely and fully obliterated.”

The White House rejected that report, calling it “flat-out wrong,” and Trump has defended his characterization of the strike’s impact.

“It was obliteration, and you’ll see that,” Trump told reporters while attending the NATO summit in the Netherlands. He said the intelligence was “very inconclusive” and described media outlets as “scum” for reporting on it.

Trump has brought a sense of victory to the summit, where he has boasted about the effectiveness of the strikes, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer” and which hit three Iranian nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

Robert Sherman and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
