(NewsNation) — A peace deal to end the war in Gaza is starting to gain traction, with Hamas signaling it’s ready to talk and U.S. officials set to join negotiations.
A White House official tells NewsNation that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are involved in “deep discussions” with negotiators in Egypt and that the talks are going very well. This comes as Qatar’s prime minister joins the peace discussions and pushes for international guarantees, while Trump advocates for broader peace in the Middle East.
As part of the proposed peace deal, the Trump administration has called for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. President Donald Trump met with Edan Alexander at the White House on Tuesday, two years after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel. Alexander was held hostage for 584 days. Trump also met with the family of 21-year-old Omer Neutra, whose body remains in Gaza. He was killed on October 7.
“We want a release of the hostages immediately, et cetera. And so our team is over there now, another team just left, and other countries, literally every country in the world, has supported the plan,” Trump said. “I don’t think there’s anybody that hasn’t actually, not that I’ve seen, but there’s a real chance that we could do something.”
Axois reports that President Trump told the families the next 48 hours will be crucial for the efforts to reach a deal. On Tuesday, President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he will do everything to ensure both sides stick to a deal if it happens.
