(NewsNation) — The U.S. State Department has issued a security alert for U.S. citizens in Sweden after media reports of Iran possibly pressuring Swedish gangs to carry out attacks against U.S. and Israeli interests.
“U.S. citizens in Sweden are advised to exercise increased caution and maintain awareness of their surroundings, particularly near the U.S. Embassy,” department officials said in the press release.
One of the gangs, known as the Foxtrot Network, was named in the press release. Tracy Walder, a former CIA officer and NewsNation national security contributor, said the Foxtrot Network’s leader, Rawa Majid, is acting as a proxy of Iran and doing their bidding.
“Mostly what they’re going after in this point in time are Jewish targets, so Israeli embassies and synagogues within Sweden,” Walder said.
Walder added that it’s highly likely the gangs will expand beyond the two targets.
Iran launched airstrikes on a U.S. air base in Doha, Qatar, on Monday in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear sites. A ceasefire between Israel and Iran was announced later Monday by U.S. President Donald Trump.
