(NewsNation) — Ukraine will soon present the United States with a revised peace plan that doesn’t include ceding land to Russia, among other changes, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy said on social media that his Wednesday schedule includes a “conversation with the U.S. side regarding … postwar reconstruction and economic development.”
His team is finalizing a 20-point document he described as having the ability to “define the parameters for ending the war.”
He added that “we expect to deliver this document to the United States in the near future following our joint work with President Trump’s team and partners in Europe.”
Zelenskyy’s proposal includes security guarantees to help prevent a future Russian invasion, as well as a plan for reconstruction after nearly four years of full-scale war against the Kremlin.
Zelenskyy also said the plan won’t involve his country ceding any territory to Russia, which has demanded the entire eastern Donbas region. Russian forces occupy most but not all of the land there, but Zelenskyy has long refused to hand it over as part of a peace agreement.
In an interview with Politico earlier this week, President Donald Trump called on Zelenskyy to start making concessions and accused him of “losing the war.”
“It’s not easy with Russia because Russia has the upper hand, and they always did, they’re much bigger … At some point, size will win, generally,” Trump said.
Zelenskyy’s changes to the U.S.-backed peace plan come as Trump advocated for an overdue Ukrainian election. Wartime elections under martial law are not allowed in Ukraine, but Trump has renewed pressure on Zelenskyy to hold a vote.
“You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore,” Trump told Politico.
Zelenskyy confirmed to reporters that an election could happen within 60 to 90 days, pending support to ensure its authenticity.
“I’m ready for elections, and moreover I ask … that the U.S. help me, maybe together with European colleagues, to ensure the security of an election,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump also criticized European leaders for failing to control migration or stop the war altogether.
“I think they’re weak, but I also think that they want to be so politically correct, I think they don’t know what to do,” Trump said.
Some European leaders have raised concerns about the U.S. abandoning Ukraine, with European Council President António Costa urging Trump to respect the group and its decisions: “It is like this — that allies behave with each other.”
