Video: Miss Jamaica hospitalized after falling during Miss Universe preliminary round

(NEXSTAR) – Dr. Gabrielle Henry, a contestant representing Jamaica in the Miss Universe competition, was hospitalized after falling onstage during a preliminary event in Thailand on Nov. 19.

Footage of the incident, captured by Instagram user @meekiimodez, shows Henry standing in front of the audience, modeling an evening gown, before appearing to walk away and fall off the stage. Additional footage shared to social media appears to show Henry being removed on a stretcher.

After the incident, Henry was taken to a hospital in Rangsit, just north of Bangkok, according to a statement from officials with the Miss Universe Jamaica Organization.

“She was rushed to the Paolo Rangsit Hospital, where medical professionals are attending to her care and have advised that she is not suffering from any life-threatening injuries; however, they continue to conduct tests to ensure her full recovery,” reads a portion of the statement, which was posted Nov. 19.

“We kindly ask everyone to stay upbeat, lift her in prayer, and send positive thoughts as she receives the necessary medical care.”

Raúl Rocha Cantú, the president and co-owner of the Miss Universe pageant, also said he visited Henry in the hospital, where she remained overnight into Thursday.

“I was there with her family and her, and thankfully, there are no broken bones and she is under good care,” Rocha Cantú said.

A representative for the Miss Universe pageant was not immediately available to comment on Henry’s current condition or her participation in the finals, which begin at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday (or 8 a.m. Friday morning in Thailand).

Henry, a junior resident at the University Hospital of the West Indies, had expressed excitement for the final rounds on Instagram just before the incident.

“It is crazy to imagine that just a few weeks ago I was preparing for the Miss Universe stage, and now I’m here!” she wrote in an Instagram post shared Tuesday. “All the emotions, the rush of excitement, the joy, reside right here with me as I prepare to represent my beloved country.”
