(NewsNation) — Four men snowmobiling were caught in an avalanche in Washington state on Friday, resulting in the death of two.

Around 4 p.m. local time, the men were recreating in the snow in the mountains of Longs Pass, east of Seattle, when they were caught in the avalanche. Paul Markoff, 38, and Erik Henne, 43, were killed, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

The two survivors sent distress calls using a Garmin satellite device, and search volunteers responded using snowmobiles and winter backcountry equipment. They transported the two survivors, but due to “hazardous conditions,” the two victims were not recovered at the time.

The next day, search crews returned with trained K-9s to recover the bodies. They were airlifted to a search base and turned over to the coroner’s office.

“The Sheriff’s Office and KCSR (Kittitas County Search and Rescue) extend condolences to the families and friends of those lost,” a news release said.
