NEW YORK (PIX11) – A winter storm is expected to dump up to 10 inches of snow across the tri-state area on Friday, according to PIX11 meteorologists.

A winter storm warning will go into effect on Friday afternoon for the following areas:

New York

  • The Bronx
  • Brooklyn
  • Manhattan
  • Queens
  • Staten Island
  • Long Island
  • Westchester
  • Rockland

New Jersey

  • Bergen County
  • Essex County
  • Passaic County
  • Union County
  • Hudson County
  • Morris County

Timeline

The watch goes into effect at 4 p.m. on Friday and will last through 1 p.m. on Saturday. Snow will start off dry and powdery before becoming wet overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Sleet could mix into the snow in northeast New Jersey, New York City and Long Island during the storm.

Expected snow totals

The NWS warned that between 4-8 inches of snow is expected, with 10 inches possible, in all areas under a winter storm watch. The rest of the tri-state area can expect to see between 2-5 inches, with up to 8 inches in isolated areas.

Snow could fall at a rate of 1 inch per hour, with 2 inches possible with heavier bands of the storm, according to the NWS.

Future forecast

The snow will move out of New York and New Jersey by Saturday afternoon. Highs will only reach 40 degrees.

The next storm will hit the area on Sunday into Monday, where rain could wash away all the snow.
