(NewsNation) — Bridget Barton was enjoying the Kansas City Chiefs parade when gunfire erupted. She and her family fled to safety like thousands of others.
When she got home and opened her backpack, she found a bullet lodged deep within one of her blankets. Barton is turning in the evidence to Kansas City police.
“I’ve been through some really traumatic things in my life, and this by far tops it,” Barton said Thursday during an appearance on “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.” “This is the most helpless we’ve ever felt, as a parent, you know. What do you do? How do you prepare for something like that? … If it was an argument, why did it start and not stop? Why? Why all the extra people? Why the kids?”
One person died and 22 others were injured after police say a dispute between several people broke out into gunfire Wednesday at the parade in Missouri.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas held a news conference Thursday morning to provide updates on the investigation into Wednesday’s shooting.
Preliminary investigations show there were no threats of terrorism or homegrown violent extremism, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said.
Police have not disclosed the identities of three people who have been detained or said whether any of them will face charges. Graves said two of the three people are juveniles, and police recovered several firearms.
