(NewsNation) — The FBI is warning about an online threat called “764,” a decentralized network of predators who use social media to blackmail children into committing violent acts against themselves and others for power and bragging rights.

The agency has 250 open investigations into the group, which operates as a loose network of individuals who target vulnerable youth through social media platforms. The predators manipulate children into sharing explicit photos, cutting themselves and, in some cases, encouraging suicide.

The group has attempted international attacks, allegedly targeting a Lady Gaga concert in Brazil by recruiting teenagers to carry out a bombing attack, which ultimately failed.

“The 764 group suborns violence for the sake of violence … targeting the most vulnerable in our population for clout,” according to FBI officials.

Colton Easton, director of project development at Safer Schools Together, told NewsNation that the group attracts individuals seeking belonging and notoriety within online communities. The founder originated in Texas, but the network has spread internationally with no geographic boundaries.

“The ultimate goal really is some sort of destabilization of central groups or communities that are society essentially,” Easton said. Members gain status within the network by exploiting vulnerable youth and encouraging harmful behaviors.

The predators specifically target children showing signs of distress or isolation, using their vulnerability as an opportunity to coerce them into dangerous activities. They often require victims to carve symbols associated with the group during self-harm incidents.

Easton said that early intervention is crucial. He encouraged parents, teachers and students to report concerning behavior and use resources at SaferSchoolsTogether.com.
