Live: Republican senators hold Palisades Fire hearing in California

(NewsNation) — A pair of Republican senators are holding a hearing in California about last winter’s deadly fires. You can watch it in the player above.

Sen. Rick Scott, chair of the Senate committee on aging, and Sen. Ron Johnson will hear from six witnesses about the fire and the recovery.

Last month, NewsNation obtained video that appeared to show hikers calling 911 over a smoldering blaze days before it became the deadly fire that destroyed more than 6,800 structures.

The footage contradicts federal claims that after an initial fire was declared fully extinguished on New Year’s Day, embers continued to burn beneath dense vegetation.

Two days after that report, an LA Times investigation found that firefighters pleaded with their leadership to remain on that fire, but they were told to leave. Five days later, it erupted.

The area is expecting heavy rain over the next few days and is under an evacuation warning through Sunday morning, out of concern that burn scars could lead to mudslides.
