SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah (KREX) — A missing mother and son, who were reported missing in Colorado, were identified as those who were found dead in the Canyonlands National Park on Thursday. Their names have yet to be released out of respect for the family, according to the San Juan County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office.

The agency stated on Friday, that based on the evidence gathered so far, the case is being investigated as a murder and suicide.

The incident was initially reported on Thursday morning after a park service employee reported a suspicious vehicle that was apparently parked overnight in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands.

After arriving to the scene, park rangers found an unresponsive 6-year-old child inside the car. The mother was found dead outside the vehicle.

Life-saving measures were performed on the boy. But when he was transported to a nearby hospital, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The mother and son were positively identified through the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the sheriff’s office.

Both were reported missing by the husband/father in Colorado on Wednesday.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this incredibly difficult time,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Our investigators are diligently working on this case.”

The sheriff’s office also stated it believes there isn’t any ongoing threat to the public.
