(NewsNation) — California health officials have issued a warning to residents against eating foraged mushrooms due to recent poisonings.

The California Department of Health said as of Friday, 21 poisonings were linked to eating wild, foraged mushrooms known as death caps.

They added one case resulted in death, and other patients suffered liver damage.

The CDPH says the death caps can typically be found near oaks and other hardwood trees, including pine trees. However, they are easily mistaken for edible mushrooms.

Symptoms from eating foraged mushrooms include watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration.

CDPH officials advise people to buy mushrooms from reputable stores or known commercial sources.
