Suspect dies at hospital after shooting at Evergreen High School

Three students had been hospitalized, including the alleged shooter

DENVER (KDVR) — The suspect in a shooting at Evergreen High School on Wednesday died of self-inflicted injuries at the hospital, according to officials, leaving two other juvenile students injured.

Class was canceled for both Thursday and Friday in light of the shooting.

Jefferson County authorities reported that, at about 12:24 p.m., there were reports of an “active assailant” near Evergreen High School. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press conference that three students were shot at the high school and were taken to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

As of Thursday morning, one student remained at the hospital in critical condition while a second student with non-life-threatening injuries was no longer in hospital care, according to St. Anthony Hospital Trauma Medical Director Brian Blackwood. The suspected shooter, a male student of Evergreen High School, died at the hospital from his injuries on Wednesday evening, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office had a reunification point at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, located at 1928 S. Hiwan Dr., but will have a resource and information center open at the elementary school on Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The county sent out an “urgent lookout alert” to people in the area, saying that there was an “active shooter” reported at the school.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said that they do not believe law enforcement fired any rounds, and were re-entering the school Wednesday afternoon to learn whether the shots were fired inside the building or outside, and what kind of weapon was used. The agency later said investigators believe there were multiple scenes, both inside and outside of the building.

A view of the scene from SkyFOX showed numerous emergency vehicles outside the school on Wednesday afternoon. The school serves over 900 students, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
