(WGN) – Sparks were flying across the internet on Tuesday, with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announcing to their fans that they had gotten engaged after two years together.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” Swift wrote on Instagram alongside several photos of her and Kelce embracing in what appeared to be a garden filled with flowers.
The big news caps years of intense media speculation about the future of the two stars.
Swift and Kelce first started dating in 2023, though the couple was initially coy about when, and if, they had actually become an item. Kelce, however, had previously admitted in July 2023 that he had attempted to get Swift’s attention at her concert in Kansas City a few weeks before, but was unsuccessful in gifting her a friendship bracelet with his telephone number on it.
In the months that followed, rumors started swirling that the two had been in contact and even met up a few times — rumors that NFL commentators and podcasters were happy to run with.

Swift later showed up to watch Kelce play at Arrowhead Stadium in September of 2023, and was seen alongside Kelce after the game in a video that soon went viral online. One could even argue that it was this viral video — taken by Jarrett Payton of Nexstar’s WGN after the Chiefs’ blowout win against the Chicago Bears — that confirmed the duo’s relationship status to the world.
“Talk about being at the right place at the right time!” Payton wrote in a Sept. 24, 2023, post to X which included the video. “Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce leaving Arrowhead together after the game.”
Payton said he had been asked by a security guard to delete the video, but he ignored the request. It soon went viral, gathering nearly 16 million views by the following day.
Now, two years later, Payton reshared the video in a post congratulating the couple.
“I captured the first vid of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce together back in 2023. This vid literally broke the internet,” Payton said.
But Payton also used the opportunity to try and snag an invite to the wedding.
“Congrats to them on their engagement. I think I deserve an invite to the wedding. Just saying,” Payton said.
