MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police were called to a convenience store in Tennessee on Monday after someone reported seeing a casket in the parking lot.

According to people in the neighborhood, the casket was found outside the Speedy Corner store in Memphis, where it sat for several hours.

Keith Leachman, with local youth anti-violence organization Stop the Killing, Cut the Beef, went live on Facebook to comment on one of the strangest things he’d ever seen.

“I don’t know if it’s a prank or what, but this is nonsense. Someone get MPD to Speedy Corner,” said Leachman online. “I don’t know if there’s a body in there.”

He wanted to know who left it there and why.

“I was shocked that someone would put a casket on the corner of a public store, and the crime is already up. I was heartbroken,” Leachman said.

Pictures of the lone casket were shared all over Facebook, with someone even getting inside for a social media moment.

Leachman said with all the gun violence in the city, there’s nothing funny about the situation.

“I don’t think death is a laughing matter. Young men, you don’t have to rush a date. We all got a date, and it won’t be late, I guarantee that,” said Leachman.

Police responded to the scene but didn’t take a report.

Leachman said he later learned someone hauling scrap ran out of room on his truck and left the casket behind.

He said it’s not just creepy, but disrespectful.

“If he had room to get it to that location, he could have taken it to another location instead of a public corner store,” he said.

The casket was removed several hours later.
