(NewsNation) — The University of Michigan dismissed head football coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, citing an investigation that found he engaged in “an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

Following his dismissal, Moore was arrested and booked in a county jail. His arrest came the same day the Pittsfield Township Police Department announced it was investigating an alleged assault. A news release from the department said a suspect was taken into custody but did not provide a name.

It was unclear why Moore was arrested or whether his termination was linked to the assault investigation.

Who is Sherrone Moore?

Moore, 39, spent two seasons as head coach for the University of Michigan and was coming off back-to-back winning seasons with the Wolverines. Michigan finished this season 9-3 and went 8-5 in Moore’s first season as head coach. He joined the team in 2018, first as a tight ends coach and then as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

He signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million last year, according to the Associated Press. It’s unclear if the university will have to buy out the remaining years on the contract.

Originally from Derby, Kansas, Moore played for Butler County Community College in Kansas and the University of Oklahoma as an offensive lineman. According to the Associated Press, Moore is married with three young daughters.

Where has Sherrone Moore coached?

Moore’s coaching career began at the University of Louisville in 2009 as a graduate assistant, then as a tight ends coach, before joining Central Michigan University in 2014. While at CMU, Moore first served as a tight ends coach before being promoted to assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2017.

He caught the attention of Michigan’s head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who brought him on board as a tight ends coach in 2018. Moore was promoted to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2021, when the Wolverines bounced back from a 2-4, pandemic-shortened season, according to the Associated Press. This began a three-year run of excellence that culminated in the school’s first national title in 26 years.

In January 2024, Moore took over as head coach after Harbaugh left the team to coach in the NFL.

Has Sherrone Moore been in trouble before?

This year, Moore served a two-game suspension as part of self-imposed sanctions for NCAA violations related to Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal, which came to light in 2023.

Following Moore’s termination on Wednesday, athletic director Warde Manuel released a statement regarding the university’s investigation.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Manuel said. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.

The university has appointed Biff Poggi as interim head coach.
