FLORIDA – (WMBB) – Snow has begun to fall early Sunday in the Florida Panhandle.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation’s FL511, snow began collecting along the grassy area in Walton County on I-10. Viewers of Nexstar’s WMBB reported snow in DeFuniak Springs and Ponce de Leon in Holmes County, with the majority of other areas currently experiencing only rain.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Washington, Holmes and Jackson counties until 11 a.m. CST. Just enough frigid air rushed in behind a cold front to turn the rain showers into snowflakes.
Last year, some parts of Florida saw up to 8 inches of snow in what was the most significant snowfall in many places since the late 1800s.
Prior to last year, the last time the Panhandle saw snow was in December 1989. The area saw freezing rain and sleet in January 2014.
Southeastern Alabama and southern Georgia also got to celebrate a second winter wonderland in less than a year this weekend. Snow covered the ground in Columbus and Macon, Georgia, and officials warned enough might fall to make travel treacherous.
