CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — Hundreds of students at a middle school in Wake County were exposed to pornographic images on Snapchat, according to officials.
In a letter sent to families, Alston Ridge Middle School Principal Rodney L. Smith said the incident was reported Thursday.
According to Smith, students shared the pornographic images through multiple Snapchat social media groups outside of school.
Approximately 300 students are part of the Snapchat groups, according to Smith.
“I regret that our students were involved in this incident and exposed to inappropriate content through a group chat,” Smith said in a statement. “Our school counselors are available to support students who express concern or need assistance regarding this incident.”
The principal thanked parents for helping students learn to use their cell phones responsibly and encouraged them to report incidents by calling the Wake County Public School System Tip Line at 919-856-1911 or using the anonymous reporting system Say Something.
Smith also encouraged parents to contact him if they had any questions about the incident.
