AIKEN, S.C. (WCBD) – A radioactive wasp nest was recently found in South Carolina, according to a report from the Department of Energy (DOE).
The report says Radiological Control Operations at the Savannah River Site discovered a wasp nest near the nuclear facility on July 3.
The nest was probed, and according to the report, teams discovered the contamination level was greater than 10 times the total contamination values allowed in federal regulations.
The nest was sprayed to kill the wasps.
According to the report, the nest is considered an onsite contamination and not related to a loss of contamination control. It also said there was no contamination in the surrounding area.
