(NewsNation) — A nine-year-old is recovering after being shot during a drive-by around 4 a.m. Saturday.

He is back home recovering after being taken to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The bullet has not yet been taken out of his body after doctors decided it was best to monitor the situation.

“They said the bullet had went through his back and into his leg and the bullet is located close to a large artery, and if they removed it then he might not be able to walk,” the boy’s aunt told Fox 5.

“So, they have to give it a couple of weeks to monitor the bullet traveling so they can see if they can get him some surgery.”

Neighbors told the aunt they believed the shooters hit the wrong house. Police told Fox 5 they are working to identify suspects.

The young boy was sleeping in his bed when he was hit.

“I was just crying because I was bleeding, and I didn’t know they were gunshots,” the boy told Fox 5.
