CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WFLA) — An unexpected visitor flew in just as a private 9/11 remembrance ceremony was being held in Cape Coral.

Firefighters said they heard an eagle screech as if announcing its presence as the bird landed on top of their fire station on Burnt Store Road.

This was just as they were holding a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. — when the first plane struck the north tower — to honor those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The bald eagle “stayed for a while before gracefully flying away,” the Cape Coral Fire Department said in a social media post sharing photos of the encounter.

“What an incredible symbol of patriotism, freedom, community, and hope on this tragic day in our nation’s history,” the fire department added.
