NEW YORK (PIX11) — Tesla is recalling thousands of battery systems due to potential failure, which could lead to overheating, smoke, and flames that may cause death, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Over 10,000 Tesla Powerwall 2 units, a battery system used for residential or light commercial purposes, are being recalled after 22 reports of overheating. The recall was announced on Thursday on the CPSC website

“The lithium-ion battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems can cause the unit to stop functioning during normal use, which can result in overheating and, in some cases, smoke or flame, and can cause death or serious injury due to fire and burn hazards.”

The affected battery systems were manufactured in Reno, Nevada, and were sold online nationwide between November 2020 and December 2022.

Tesla has remotely discharged nearly all the affected units that were online to prevent overheating until they are replaced, according to the CPSC.

NewsNation affiliate WPIX reached out to Tesla regarding the recall, but the company was not immediately available to comment. Customers who may have been impacted by the recall can contact the Tesla Support team by email at powerwallsupportna@tesla.com or toll-free at 877-961-7652.
