(NewsNation) — The FDA has expanded a frozen shrimp recall to include more than 83,000 bags of the raw crustaceans for potential radioactive contamination.
The shrimp, imported from Indonesia and sold nationwide under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands, may have come in contact with Cesium-137, a radioactive substance.
Stores that sold the shrimp include Price Chopper, Jewel-Osco, Albertsons, Safeway and Lucky Supermarket, the FDA said.
The shrimp was on the shelves in Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Wyoming and Vermont.
At Price Chopper, shrimp were sold in 1-pound bags with UPC codes of 0 41735 and 01358 3. Other stores carried 2-lb bags with codes 021130 and 13224-9.
Long-term exposure to Cesium-137 elevates an individual’s risk of cancer, according to the FDA.
No illnesses have been reported as of Dec. 23, and the FDA said no U.S. products have tested positive for Cesium-137 contamination.
Customers who purchased the affected shrimp are asked to throw it away or return it to the store.
In August, the FDA issued a recall of frozen shrimp potentially contaminated by Cesium-137 from the same company, Pt. Bahari Makmur Sejati, after the radioactive substance was detected at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah, Georgia.
That recall included Great Value frozen shrimp sold at Walmart. The nation’s largest retailer was also at the center of another shrimp recall after cocktail shrimp imported from Indonesia was pulled from shelves later that same month over radioactivity concerns.
