SALT LAKE CITY (KTVX) — A recall alert has been issued for a smart fragrance diffuser produced by Utah-based company Pura Scents because of a risk for magnets becoming dislodged, which can be hazardous if the magnets are swallowed.

The product is the Pura 4 Smart Home Fragrance Diffusers, and the affected models are those with detachable covers.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the magnets in the cover can become detached, and if swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and become stuck in the digestive system. They can cause perforations, twisting, or blockage of the intestines, which can lead to infection, blood poisoning, and death.

Pura Scents is recalling 851,400 diffusers, 1,100 of which were sold in Canada, and the rest in the United States.

There have been three reported incidents of the magnets coming loose, but no injuries have been reported, and this is a voluntary recall by Pura Scents.

These diffusers were sold online on Pura.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, and Scheels.com. They were also sold at Target and Scheels stores nationwide from August 2023 through May 2025 for about $50.

How to tell if your diffuser is being recalled

Some of the covers on those models have five magnets, and those are the ones being recalled, according to Pura Scents. The two large magnets in the center of the cover can come loose and pose a hazard.

If there are only three small magnets on the cover to your diffuser, then it is not a model that is being recalled.

You can also check eligibility of your device based on the serial number, which can be located on the back of the diffuser.

These are the affected ranges of serial numbers:

  • JX230000001 to JX230801425
  • JX240000001 to JX240049959

You can find more information about the recall and how to determine eligibility on Pura Scents’ website.

What to do if your diffuser is being recalled

If your diffuser is affected by the recall, Pura is advising you to dispose of the magnetic cover for the diffuser. You can then request a new cover from Pura without having to return the product.

Pura said that you can continue to use the device while waiting for a replacement cover, but that you should keep it out of the reach of pets or children in the meantime.

You need to verify your device’s serial number using this tool on Pura Scents’ website. Once you’ve verified your eligibility, you will be able to purchase a new cover for free using Pura’s website, and they will ship you the new cover.
