Hyundai, Kia recall over 330K vehicles, warn fuel tanks could melt

(NewsNation) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall of more than 250,000 Kia vehicles and 85,000 Hyundai cars over an issue with fuel tanks that could cause them to melt.

The recall includes 250,547 K5 vehicles made from 2021-2024 model years, manufactured at Kia Georgia from March 27, 2020, through Jan. 23, 2024, that are equipped with a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine.

A similar recall was issued for 85,043 Hyundai Sonatas made between 2020-2023.

The issue stems from a purge control system check valve that controls the direction of airflow from the charcoal canister to the engine. The valve may deteriorate over time, allowing pressurized air to flow into the fuel tank, which can cause it to expand and contact the hot exhaust pipe components.

If a vehicle is driven in that condition for a long period of time, melting of the fuel tank may occur and could result in a fuel leak.

Signs that this could be happening include the illumination of the check engine light, popping sounds from the fuel tank area and the vehicle running rough.

Owners of the vehicles will receive notification through the mail with instructions to bring their vehicle to a dealer or can search the NHTSA site using their VIN to find out if their vehicle is affected.

Dealerships will replace the affected valve and inspect the fuel tank for damage, replacing it if needed.

Kia will reimburse owners for the cost of repairs.
