Millions of above-ground pools recalled after 9 deaths reported

(NewsNation) — Approximately 5 million above-ground swimming pools have been recalled for a potential risk after nine children died over the last two decades.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the impacted models include certain above-ground pools with a compression strap along the outside that can provide a way for children to gain access and enter the water, even when the ladder is removed.

The CPSC reported that the children who drowned ranged in age from 22 months to 3 years old. The deaths took place between 2007 and 2022 in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri.

The CPSC said it was aware of three separate instances in which children gained access to the recalled pools by using the compression strap.

The recalled pools were sold under the brand names Bestway, Coleman, Intel and Polygroup since 2022 by multiple U.S. vendors, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Costco. More than 250,000 were sold in Canada. They range in price from $400 to more than $1,000, according to the CPSC.

The CPSC urges consumers to contact Bestway, Intex and Polygroup for a free repair kit, which includes a rope used to maintain the structural integrity of the pool. The recall number is 25-393.
