YORK COUNTY, Pa. (NewsNation) — Three police officers have died and two others are severely wounded after a shooting in Pennsylvania, authorities said.

The officers were following up on an investigation in North Codorus Township, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, on Wednesday when shots were fired.

The gunman was killed after being shot by police, according to Col. Christopher Paris with Pennsylvania State Police. The surviving officers were in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

“The grief will be unbearable, but we will bear it,” Paris said.

Officials have not revealed the names of the officers or the suspect, but said they were following up on a domestic investigation when the shooting took place.

In a statement, police said the investigation will span several locations throughout York County.

The incident was one of the deadliest for police in Pennsylvania this century, and comes nearly seven months after an officer was killed responding to a hostage situation at a hospital in York County.

“This kind of violence isn’t OK. We need to do better as a society,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said during a news conference.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Wednesday that the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would assist in the investigation.

“Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable. Pray for the officers involved,” she wrote.

Officials have not said what led up to the shooting.

Nearby schools were on lockdown Wednesday as a precaution, and the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia said in a social media post that it was “monitoring the incident” and had issued “a precautionary alert for our community.”
