(NewsNation) — Heat-seeking camera technology helped police rescue a toddler who wandered away from his Central Michigan home wearing only a diaper over the weekend.
Police say the 2-year-old Blackman Township child was reported missing Saturday evening, prompting a coordinated search effort that included police K-9 units and a state police helicopter. Local police and volunteers also reportedly joined in the effort.
Around 11:30 p.m., after the child had been missing three hours, the aerial state police unit locked in on a figure curled up in a ditch near I-94, according to a news release from the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.
Video provided by authorities shows the police helicopter using heat-sensitive camera technology.
“This is looking like it’s possibly the child,” a state police trooper says in the video.
“We’ve got him,” a first responder says a short while later. Police can then be seen carrying the child to a waiting ambulance.
Authorities say the child, wearing only a diaper, was cold but alert and conscious. He was taken to the hospital and listed in good condition.
Temperatures at the time of the rescue were in the 40s.
Darin R. McIntosh, director of the Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Department, praised all of the departments that worked together to find the child.
“Without the collective efforts of all these agencies, this incident would have undoubtedly ended in tragedy,” he said.
