PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Roger Williams Park Zoo is celebrating the birth of twin red panda kits.

The two “little bundles of fluff” were born on July 4 to first-time parents Zan and Kendji, according to the zoo. This marks the first successful red panda birth in the zoo’s history.

The kits, one male and one female, are currently snuggled up with mom behind the scenes and will remain there for several weeks.

“Mom Zan is thriving in her new role, caring for her babies with incredible dedication,” the zoo said.

The zoo described the milestone births as being “a tremendous win for global conservation efforts,” since red pandas classified as an endangered species.

“Every birth is a step toward ensuring a future for this remarkable species,” the zoo explained.
