GREEN, Ohio (WJW) — A 13-year-old boy was critically injured falling from a trailer in a Memorial Day parade in Ohio on Monday, and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The boy was riding atop a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck just before 11:30 a.m. Monday in Green, Ohio, according to a statement from a spokesperson for the mayor’s office.

The boy was struck by the trailer’s dual tires, according to an afternoon update from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Green firefighters who were at the parade “responded immediately” and transported the teen to a hospital, according to the statement.

Sheriff’s deputies confirmed the teen’s injuries were “severe” and that he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The boy attended North Canton City Schools, according to the statement. His identity has not been released.

“We are deeply saddened to have been informed of the passing of one of our North Canton City Schools students,” the school district said in a statement. “There is no greater tragedy than the death of a young person, and we offer our sincere condolences and support to the family. Our crisis management team is taking action and will provide counselors and supports to students and staff throughout the district grieving this tragic loss.”

The city spokesperson earlier Monday said Summit County sheriff’s deputies and the Summit Metro Crash Team were investigating the incident.
