NEW YORK (PIX11) — A sergeant of the NYPD has been accused of pretending to be an ICE director and trying to force a family to report to an immigration enforcement location in New York City, according to court documents.

Sgt. Atickul Islam, also known as “James W. Anderson,” joined the NYPD in 2018.

According to court documents, Islam claimed to be the field office director of ICE’s New York Field Office and contacted an unnamed victim on March 29. It’s alleged he demanded the victim and their family report to an ICE location in New York City by April 15.

Islam was arrested on Tuesday, and court documents say the alleged incident took place in Queens.

He was suspended following the arrest, according to a spokesperson for the NYPD. The incident has been referred to the federal government by the NYPD once it was determined that Islam allegedly posed as a federal agent, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Islam was made sergeant of Service Area 3 in 2023, which oversees NYCHA developments in Brooklyn.
