UNIONDALE, N.Y. (PIX11) — One Long Island family was in for a surprise when they found an unusual animal wandering around their home.

Residents in Uniondale came across a 4-foot-long snake slithering near their basement window at their home on First Place on Monday around 6:30 p.m., according to Nassau County police and animal rescuer John Debacker.

The family was able to use a shovel to scoop the snake into a garbage pail until authorities and animal rescuers arrived to take it.

Experts later determined the snake was a ball python, which are non-venomous snakes that are often kept as pets. It was not immediately clear whether the snake was a pet that escaped or may have been abandoned.

The snake has since transported to an reptile handler in Merrick while authorities try to locate its owner.
