CARLE PLACE, N.Y. (PIX11) – Nassau County police officers shot and killed a man who was holding a BB shotgun in Carle Place early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Police said officers were responding to a domestic call on Rushmore Avenue around 12:20 a.m.
The mother of 33-year-old James Rosano told officers that he was intoxicated and “very irate,” according to authorities.
“Last night, she [his mother] stated that he was highly irrational and out of control,” said Stephen Fitzpatrick, the Commanding Officer of NCPD Homicide Squad.
Police said officers were speaking to Rosano’s mother at the door of their home when he, standing to their right, pointed what appeared to be a shotgun at them. The officers pushed the mother into the house to protect her and told him to put down the weapon, according to authorities.
Police said Rosano refused and waved the weapon, which is when one of the officers fired a single shot. Rosano was hit once in the chest and taken to a local hospital, where he died, according to authorities.
Fitzpatrick said after Rosano’s mother called 911, he told her, “Kiss me, I’m going to go outside, and die by the police.”
Police said the shotgun, which was later discovered to be a BB gun, was recovered.
Rosano has a history of run-ins with the police, ranging from assaults, burglary, arson, criminal mischief and DWI, according to authorities. Police said his last arrest was on Monday, when Rosano was accused of assaulting his girlfriend.
Rosano’s mother told police officers that he was an alcoholic, drug user and had a history of depression, according to authorities. Police said there were several calls to the home for domestic issues.
