JUNIATA COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A hunter is dead after being shot in Juniata County on Tuesday morning, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The Game Commission said a hunting party of 24 people was doing a “deer drive,” which is a hunting tactic where other hunters work together to move deer to other hunters, in an area off Vincent Tram Road in Milford Township, around 8:20 a.m. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was part of the team driving the deer.

Eventually, a buck jumped up and broke back through the drivers who were about 100 to 200 yards into the drive, according to the PGC.

The Game Commission says two hunters shot at it, but another hunter was in the direct line of fire and was struck in the right hip. He was about 127 yards away from the shooter when he was shot.

The PGC said this is being classified as a fatal hunting-related shooting incident and they are investigating it as an accident. abc27 has reached out to the Juniata County Coroner’s office for additional information on this incident.

The firearm season for deer hunters in Pennsylvania began this past weekend.
