ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Two people were taken to the hospital Sunday after a fire broke out at a multi-family home in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

According to Attleboro Fire Chief Scott LaChance, crews responded to 57 East St. around 1:45 p.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from the first floor.

The fire was contained to the first-floor living room, but LaChance said there was smoke damage throughout the home. Its residents were displaced as a result.

A man who lives on the first floor was taken to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns to his head and face.

A neighbor who helped the man get out of the home was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with suspected smoke inhalation, according to LaChance.

“The quick actions of our firefighters prevented this fire from spreading beyond the living room and causing more extensive damage,” District Chief Mark Renker said. “We also want to recognize the efforts of a neighbor who tried to help, and wish both individuals a full recovery.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the affected residents.

North Attleboro, Norton and Seekonk firefighters provided mutual aid.
