FRANKLIN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Human remains found in 2021 have been identified as missing 24 year old Cassie Sheetz.
Sheetz, a mother of three children, was reported missing back in March 2021 after being last seen near Spruce Knob in Pendleton County. The case went national with NBC News’ Missing in America franchise publishing a story on the disappearance in December of that year.
That same month, human remains were found by a hunter near Seneca Creek in the Monongahela National Forest, which were sent to the West Virginia Medical Examiners office in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute and Marshall University.
The West Virginia State Police confirmed in a press release on Jan. 24, 2025 that recent DNA testing confirmed the remains as Sheetz when compared to DNA samples sent by the Sheetz family.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call the Franklin Detachment at 304-358-2200.
