(NewsNation) — Army Secretary Dan Driscoll honored the soldiers who responded to Wednesday’s shooting at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia, where five service members were wounded.
Driscoll highlighted the swift actions of six soldiers of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, saying, “One of the things that I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers under stress and under trauma and under fire absolutely saved lives from being lost.”
Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said Thursday that of the five victims, three were released from the hospital on Wednesday. One remains at an on-base inpatient facility, is in “high spirits,” and is expected to be released next week, he said. Another soldier is still being treated at Savannah Community Hospital and, while facing a longer recovery, is expected to recover fully.
Authorities identified the shooter as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, an automated logistics specialist with the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. They said Radford opened fire on his co-workers at his workplace on the base shortly before 11 a.m. local time.
Officials said Radford used a personal handgun rather than a military-issued weapon in the attack. Fellow soldiers in the area quickly subdued the shooter, and he was taken into custody without further incident, they said.
According to NewsNation affiliate WSAV, Radford has been transported to Liberty County Jail.
