14-year-old dead after being hit by truck pulling snowboarder

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — One 14-year-old is dead following a crash involving a pickup.

According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, the crash happened around 12:30 Saturday morning, one mile southeast of Hudson.

Teague Rus, 18, was driving a pickup that was pulling a snowboarder when the snowboarder fell and the truck stopped and began to back up. A 14-year-old boy who was riding in the bed of the pickup fell and was struck by the truck.

The name of the 14-year-old who died has been released by authorities.

Rus and a 19-year-old woman drove the boy to Hawarden Regional Hospital in Iowa, where he died from his injuries. Rus and the woman were not injured.

According to the DPS, charges are pending against Rus.

On Monday, Sanford Health told KELOLAND News three children have faced life-threatening injuries from crashes involving sleds pulled by ATVs.
