MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A Memphis gynecologist, Sanjeev Kumar, is now facing 46 charges in a new indictment against him after he was accused of healthcare fraud, coercing people into sexual acts, and reusing single-use devices on patients, according to court documents.

According to court records, Kumar’s charges include Adulteration of Single-Use Devices, Misbranding of Reprocessed Single-Use Devices, Adulteration of Hysteroscopes Cleared for Reprocessing, and Healthcare Fraud.

Last month, a judge dismissed 17 counts against Kumar on 36 federal charges, but upheld the other charges.

The federal government is claiming that between September 2019 and April 2024, Kumar “engaged in a series of crimes, frauds, and other acts that abused the trust of both the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and his patients.”

If convicted, Kumar faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a supervised release of at least five years.

He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
