MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A 16-year-old male is now in jail after being accused of shooting his brother for eating his food Sunday night in East Memphis, according to Memphis Police.
The teen is charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Officers say they responded to the 1300 block of Greentree Valley Court regarding a shooting call just before midnight.
When police arrived at the scene, they say a father told them that he had heard his sons arguing about food, and then about five minutes later, he heard a gunshot.
The man said his son yelled out, “He shot me.”
Authorities say they entered the apartment and found the victim lying on a bedroom floor, suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach. Officers said he told them his brother had shot him because he had eaten his food.
The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
The 16-year-old told police he was playing with a handgun that he had gotten from his friend when he accidentally shot his brother.
The teen was immediately taken into custody.
“These days and times now we living in, I mean, everybody is so gun-violent. The first thing that they run to is a gun,” said Laverne Luellen Memphis resident. “We just have to really pay attention to our kids. And it starts from the media, it starts from YouTube, it starts from rap, it starts from everybody wanting to be a gangster in the streets and nobody has no guidance for the kids.”
