MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An elderly couple’s Christmas is ruined after they say they were scammed trying to order their Christmas gift.

Silence is all you hear on Beaver Creek Lane in Brighton, Tennessee in Tipton County — no barking. Brenda Short and her husband are supposed to be in their yard playing with their brand new Yorkie for Christmas but instead, they are out of $1300 with no Yorkie.

“It’s just sad that people are so dishonest,” said Short.

On Saturday, Short tells us she messaged a Facebook page called Yorkie Paws 4 Adoption hoping to buy a brown and black Yorkie.

“She said that she would sell us one for $350,” said Short.

Short sent $200 as a deposit after receiving a short video from the dog owner promising not to be a scam and talking about her faith. They agreed the dog would be shipped to her home on Sunday.

“And then she said, ‘I want to be completely honest about my faith as a Christian,'” Short said. “She said ‘I can deliver at 2:00.’”

But once 2:30 came, Short says the woman started giving her the runaround, “Excuse after excuse.”

Short says she wasn’t giving up. She was determined to get her new dog.

So, once she received a text message claiming to be from a pet shipping service, she responded by sending another $450 for the shipping cost.

“Then, they send me another ‘Well you can’t get it until you pay $600 for insurance.’”

In total, Brenda Short sent $1300 in four days for a dog she never received. Though, her bank did try to warn her.

“I wish I would have listened to my bank but I didn’t,” she said.

Now, she wants to warn you.

“Do your homework. I didn’t do mine. Do your homework. Don’t accept anything unless you see that puppy in your hand,” said Short.

The Facebook page, Yorkie Paws 4 Adoption is now deactivated. Short has reached out to law enforcement, but her bank says they cannot give her her money back.
